چکیده
The secondary, Roche-lobe filling stars in cataclysmic variables (CVs) are key to our understanding of the origin, evolution and behaviour of this class of interacting binary. We review the basic properties of the secondary stars in CVs and the observational and analysis methods required to detect them. We then describe the various astro-tomographic techniques which can be used to map the surface intensity distribution of the secondary star, culminating in a detailed explanation of Roche to-mography. We conclude with a summary of the most important results obtained to date and future prospects.

I review detached binaries consisting of white dwarfs with either other white dwarfs or low mass main-sequence stars in tight orbits around them. Orbital periods have been measured for 15 white dwarf/white dwarf systems and 22 white dwarf/M dwarf systems. While small compared to the number of periods known for CVs (> 300), I argue that each variety of detached system has a space density an orde...
متن کاملThe secondary star in cataclysmic variables and low mass X-ray binaries
We critically re-examine the available data on the spectral types, masses and radii of the secondary stars in cataclysmic variables (CVs) and low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs), using the new catalogue of Ritter & Kolb (1998) as a starting point. We find there are 55 reliable spectral type determinations and only 14 reliable mass determinations of CV secondary stars (10 and 5, respectively, in the...
متن کاملSecondary stars in CVs – the observational picture
Recent theoretical and observational progress has substantially improved the definition of the lower main sequence and established a new basis for a comparison of main sequence stars and the secondaries in CVs. The evolutionary sequences of Kolb & Baraffe [1999] imply that the secondaries in many CVs are expanded compared with main sequence stars of the same mass as a consequence of unusually h...
متن کاملBarnes-Evans relations for dwarfs with an application to the determination of distances to cataclysmic variables
Context. Barnes-Evans type relations provide an empirical relationship between the surface brightness of stars and their color. They are widely used for measuring the distances to stars of known radii, as the Roche-lobe filling secondaries in cataclysmic variables (CVs). Aims. The calibration of the surface brightness of field dwarfs of near-solar metalicity with spectral types A0 to L8 covers ...
متن کاملRoche tomography of cataclysmic variables: I. artefacts and techniques
Roche tomography is a technique used for imaging the Roche-lobe filling secondary stars in cataclysmic variables (CVs). In order to interpret Roche tomograms correctly, one must determine whether features in the reconstruction are real, or due to statistical or systematic errors. We explore the effects of systematic errors using reconstructions of simulated datasets and show that systematic err...
